A spokes person from the beleaguered publishing house Houghton Mifflin Harcourt confirmed to the Associated Press today that Rebecca Saletan, Senior Vice President and Publisher of adult trade books, has resigned. Saletan beat out longtime Houghton publisher and editor Janet Silver for her position earlier this year. Silver went on to Doubleday, but was laid off last month.
As we noted earlier, HMH—which represents Philip Roth and Cynthia Ozick—announced last week that they had stopped acquiring new books, due to budget cuts. Their spokesperson attempted to put a silver lining on this surprising development by assuring us that this was “not an indicator of the end of literature.”
