Illinois’ Governor Rod R. Blagojevich was arrested yesterday under suspicion that he tried to sell to the highest bidder, Illinois’ U.S. Senate seat, which was vacated by President-Elect Obama last month.
But wait! There is a pink slip connection. According to the New York Times this morning, Governor Blagojevich is accused of “putting pressure on The Chicago Tribune to fire members of its editorial board who had criticized him or lose the governor’s help on the possible sale of Wrigley Field.”
The Chicago Sun Times reports:
“In a Nov. 4 phone call, Blagojevich allegedly told Harris that he should say to Tribune Financial Advisor, the Cubs chairman and the Tribune owner, ‘our recommendation is fire all those [expletive] people, get ‘em the [expletive] out of there and get us some editorial support.’”
The Tribune Co., headed by Sam Zell (runner up for I Want Media’s Person of the Year 2008), owns the Chicago Tribune, Chicago Cubs, Wrigley Field and the Los Angeles Times, among other holdings. The company, which recently filed for bankruptcy, has been trying to sell Wrigley Field and the Cubs to generate cash to meet debt payments.
