Firing Etiquette: How Not to Incite Violence

youre-firedHere are some useful tidbits from the legal info website Nolo.com, for all you managers out there, planning how to orchestrate those mass layoffs.

Here’s an interesting pointer:

First, bring in security personnel only if you legitimately fear violence, such as if workers have made threats, and even then don’t ask them to use any strong-arm tactics like escorting workers out unless things really get out of hand.

Oh, and this:

Don’t order fancy new office furniture, throw a big expensive party, or have a management team retreat to Aspen soon after a layoff.

And always remember this fact, which I gleaned from an anonymous corporate worker whose company has been slowly gutted over the past year: when the top brass fires your assistant, you’ll be the next to go.

Happy working!
