Today The New York Times, released a story about how well-paid “white-collar” professionals are rapidly joining the unhappily unemployed pool.

The number of workers in New York City, aside from those in the financial industry, receiving unemployment benefits since 2007 has increased by over 40%, while the number of college graduates collecting unemployment has surged by 50%.

The report, issued by the Fiscal Policy Institute, forecasts that additional pink slips will average around 10,000 a month from November 2008 through the end of 2009.

The article ends on even less of a positive note proclaiming that the unemployment figures are actually lower than the report states, because fewer than 1/3 of the 225,000 unemployed residents in New York City were collecting benefits during the month of October.
