Fashion designers Carmen Marc Valvo and Betsey Johnson are opting to hold their fall 2009 runway shows somewhere other than Bryant Park during New York fashion week. The 1,000 capacity tent carries a price tag of around $100,000 — too much to be spend on your brand when people aren’t spending much in general. Will that leave slots open for designers with deep pockets who have always dreamed of showing in Bryant Park?
Now being a former fashion week regular, I can see why they would choose elsewhere. Bryant Park is an expensive venue, and holding a fashion show is just expensive in general. But, as a business investment, it’s a way for buyers and editors to check out your collection in a fun presentation. Over the past few years, even the enviornment in Bryant Park is scaling down. There aren’t as many free goodies to fill your bags with. Oh Betsey, your cartwheeling is sure to be missed in the tents in February!
