DUH! I’ve know this since the first time I got laid off, way back in 2005. At $300 a month, there was no way I could afford to pay for COBRA. I took the risk that I wouldn’t get sick or in an accident while I was without health insurance. But what if I did get sick? Not too long ago, I was stuck in the hospital for three nights with an infection that could have killed me if I opted to skip the doctor to avoid hefty medical bills. Thank goodness I had insurance back then. Says Ron Pollack of Families USA:
“COBRA health coverage is great in theory and lousy in reality.”
Families USA conducted a study that found that many are opting to not pay for COBRA and therefore they suffer from the double whammy of being unemployed without health insurance. Really, Obama and his merry men (and women) need to figure out what to do about that. Daschle? Somebody? We can’t afford COBRA!!!!
