Putting Things In Perspective

Though times pretty much suck here for all of us that can’t get a job, I watched this crazy documentary last night called Heavy Metal In Baghdad, which really showed me just how much worse things could be. It documents, over the course of a few years,  just how horrible it was/still is living in Iraq.

Everyone is armed, there are barely any legitimate jobs, you can’t go home past 7pm at night for fear of being attacked, and for those that do finally escape as refugees to neighboring countries such as Syria and Lebanon, they “are below zero” as one band member put it, and feel guilty for leaving family behind even though they are repeatedly told, “never come back.”

Sorry, I don’t mean to get all touchy-feely on you all, but it was really a moving film. (And solidly reaffirms my belief that the previous administration should all be convicted of war crimes).

The band, Acrassicauda (Black Scorpion in Latin), was last known to be living as refugees in Syria, then Turkey. But a “heavy metal miracle” recently happened.  The New York Times just published a story about the band, who has since made it to the U.S., thanks to the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees, and are currently living in Elizabeth, NJ.

All the best guys!
